静けさは、苦悩や恐れを真の意味で癒します。
どんなに豪華な、あるいは、ささやかな家であろうとも、
静けさに満ち溢れた住まいをつくることは建築家の使命なのです。
私は生涯をかけて、静穏な空間をつくりあげようとしてきました。
分別の無い色や素材の選択で静けさが乱される事のないように、
私たちはいつも気を配るべきなのです。

Serenity is the great and true antidote against anguish and fear,
nad today,more than ever,it is the architect's duty to made of it
a permanent guest in the home,no matter how sumptuous of humble.
Throughout my work I have always strived to achieve serenity,
but one must be on guard not to destroy it by the use of
an indescriminate palette.

In the creation of a garden, the architect invites the partnership of the Kingdom of Nature. In a beautiful garden, the majesty of Nature is ever present, but Nature reduced to human proportions and thus transformed into the most efficient haven against the aggressiveness of contemporary life.

庭を創る際、建築家は、自然界との協調を仰ぐのです。美しい庭の中に、自然の威厳は絶えず存在します。しかしながら自然は、人間のプロポーションを縮小し、今日の生活における攻撃的なものに対する最も効果的な避難所に変わりうるのです。

ルイス・バラガン（1902-88）はメキシコを代表する建築家です。ピンクや赤の鮮やかな色使い、彫塑的な壁の構成、ランドスケープ・アーキテクチュアを先取りする大胆に水を駆使した中庭と建物との関係など、その作風はモダン、かつメキシコの叙情性豊かな風土を反映したものです。１９７６年ニューヨーク近代美術館での展覧会を契機に世界的な脚光を浴び、１９８０年建築界でもっとも名誉ある賞、プリツカー賞を受賞しています。
